“Time dissipates the meanings” – The main character of this story feels very detached from her father; in fact she didn’t really know him at all. At her father’s funeral, while making bread rolls, “time is catching in the throat”, and the main character looks back in time and remembers her childhood with her father – a flashback to an unhappy childhood filled with moves, hunger and physical abuse.

In the short story we have a 1. Person narrator, who is a young girl. The story starts in the present, where the main character and her sister are making rolls for their father’s funeral. When the main character’s sister, Janey, says that they used to call them baps, the story turns into a flashback, where bread plays an important part in the main character’s childhood.

What’s interesting about the story is how the narrator structures the story; she uses different terminologies for bread to relate to the different places the family have lived during her childhood.

The main character’s childhood is very tense; with a dominating and tyrannizing father who one minute is sitting silently in the corner but the next minute is hitting his children or wife with a slipper, a cane or a snapping belt.
