Task 1A – Comment on Nike’s efforts to stop people from associating ´the swoosh´ with sweatshop and discuss the importance of having a good image.
An article which was published in the “The Irish Times” states that, Nikes official website contains reams of information on their “Transparency 101 initiative” and includes full reports of monitoring visits to various factories. Some activists are very suspicious, because Nike doesn’t publish all their reports, and they refuse to release all their contractors. The Community aid abroad - Oxfam Australia has been running a “Nikewatch” for the past 6 years. They have come to find that some of the employees in the Nike contracted Factories is commonly required to work an additional amount of hour, the claim that it can reach 60 work hours a week. Some of the employees may experience to be threatened or harassed if they refuse overtime.
At the moment Nike has a very bad image, the cause of that is. that they are accused of making wealth on other countries poverty. This is a ongoing problem for Nike, the accusations form the NGO’s(non governmental organization) have been going on for decades now
Nikes spokeswoman Yvonne Waniuk defends Nike by saying. Nike is working with the labor issue. Therefore they employ thousands of workers in 700 factories around the world. Furthermore she says: that no one have fount a perfect monitoring system but they are trying to. And last Nike is not hiding anything
