The scandal covered by all three texts involves Rachel Dolezal, who was head of Spokane National Association for the advancement of colored people. She has described herself as being partially African American, although her parents claim otherwise.

According to Jessica Elgot, the author of the article “Civil rights activist Rachel Dolezal misrepresented herself as black, claim parents”, Rachel Dolezal has German, Czech and traces of Native American origin, but not African-American as she alleges. The article has an objective attitude towards the subject. It merely informs the reader about the parents who claim that Rachel Dolezal has been lying about her racial heritage, and therefore the case is portrayed neutrally and factually. Besides that, not all authors discuss the subject objectively. Guilaine Kinouani discusses, in the opinion article: “Why black women feel so betrayed by Rachel Dolezal”, a critical view on Rachel Dolezal due to the fact that she lied about her roots. Guilaine Kinouani believes that Rachel Dolezal’s lie has a negative effect on the African community and her civil rights activism will not make up for her falsehood. Therefore, the article expresses a critical focus on the topic. On the contrary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are sympathetic with Rachel Dolezal since he, in the article “Let Rachel Dolezal Be as Black as She Wants to Be”, argues that it is scientifically proven that race is a myth, and therefore everyone should be allowed to select their own cultural priorities. With a positive view on Rachel Dolezal he explains that the evidence against her seems conclusive, however this should not cast a gloom over her doings.
