Analyse af Lentils and Lilies

The short story takes place in Britain in the 1980's. The reason why it takes place in Britain is because Jade talks about £ later in the story and the £ is the British currency. The story is written in the year of 1990 and it must take place before that year, it could be in between the years 1950 and 1990 because computers are mentioned and the computers were invented in the 1950's.

It is written in 3rd person narrator which makes the reader incapable of identification with the main character. The narrator is omniscient, but chooses to hide some information that could make the readers feel sympathy for Jade.

Jade Beaumont is a girl who is studying for her A-levels. She wants to obtain big things with her life and the biggest thing she wants, is not to become like her mother. This is a natural example of the youth in the modern society. "She was never going to go dead inside or live somewhere boring like this, and she would make sure she was in charge at any work she did and not let it run her" This example shows that she doesn't wants to become like her mother who Jade believes is dead inside. Jade wants to be the opposite of her mother. The example also shows that Jade wants to be in control of everything she does. She doesn't want to be controlled by anyone; she will never let somebody ruin her life. "When she thought of her mother, she saw tendons and hawers, a taut figure at the front door screaming at them all do their music pratice. She was always off out; she made them do what she said by remote control. Her trouble was, she'd forgotten how to relax. It was no wonder Dad was like he was" This example shows that she's scared of becoming like her mother. Multiple times she mentions her mother and how she is, which shows a certain insecurity within Jade.
