Important events in American history (Native Americans)
(1492-1900)
1492: Columbus discovers (???) America.
Columbus led his three ships - the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria - out of the Spanish port of Palos on August 3, 1492. His objective was to sail west until he reached Asia (the Indies) where all the gold, pearls and wealth would be. His first stop was the Canary Islands where the lack of wind left his expedition becalmed until September 6.
When Columbus came to shore, there were already natives inhabiting the land, named Indians (later known as Native Americans) as Columbus initially thought he had reached India. This was in fact what we today know as America.
1622: First Indian uprising in an English colony (Virginia).
A spring morning when hundreds of Powhatan warriors descended upon English colonists in the state Virginia, burning settlements and plantations along the James River in a sudden and fierce attack.
This was how the Powhatan Uprising of March 22, 1622 began. This claimed the lives of approximately 347 colonists and came perilously close to extinguishing England's most promising outpost in North America. By 1622 the colonists number more than 1000.
Indian Removal Act 1830
President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act on 28th May 1930. The Act's purpose was to move all Indian tribes that lived east of the Mississippi River to the west. Land greed was a big reason for the federal government's position on that removal. The law itself didn't order the removal of the Indians directly, but it gave the President authorization to negotiate with the Indian tribes about moving to another land.
