Chavs: en fattig hvid underklasse i Storbritannien

The working class in Britain is identified as the chavs. Chavs are a stereotype of teenagers or young adults with working class or underground background. The stereotype of the chavs says that they are wearing tracksuits and relaxed close like that. It is people with aggressive or criminal inclinations. Often they do not have a job. But the once who have a job, generally, have low-paid jobs such as hairdressing, social care or in the industry and trade industry. They are poor people and they are not proud of being a chav. The people in the working class have mostly grandparents and great-grandparents, which also were in this society class. That means the people have a working history, and it depends on previous background. Chavs are often used in comedy, where comedians make the ‘’chav’’ character, with the cloth, attitude etc. They make fun with the stereotype, and that is really not helping the working class, to be more accepted from the other classes in the British society. In the following it will be discussed, whether the big class difference in England is a problem, and what the problem is with the chavs.

A British historian, David Starkly, declared, ‘’the whites have become black’’. He meant that the destructive, nihilistic gangster culture had become fashion. His pronouncement was very racistic. He was judging the black people as unemployed criminal people without an education. Now the whites have this black culture, the low class white people. These people he was talking about, is definitely the chavs. The upper class people have edified a sort of racism against the working class. It is wrong to put groups of people into boxes. When people such as David Starkly generalize the chavs and the black people, he tells the rest of the society that this is how they are. It turns wrong when people start talking about them and us. It is not even possible to stigmatize a group of people. If the chavs over and over again hear in the media that they are stupid and all of them are criminals, they will consider demonstrating. Especially the working class needs to be represented positively in the media. They need a voice in politics, because now no one cares. There is a demonization of the working class in Britain. The other classes in the society demonize the chavs with terrible prejudices. The group of people will not accept it forever and there will be riots. This is now happening in Britain, when the police shot a black man. This episode was the straw that broke the camel's back.
