The next day the witch locks Hansel in a cage, and forces Grethel to work hard. Poor Grethel washes, scrubs and cleans all day. She is unhappy and cries, because she can’t help her brother, which must remain in the cage, until he’s fat enough. The witch then wants to eat him. Everyday, the old witch, walks up to the cage and says that Hansel needs to put his finger out, so she can feel if has become fat enough. But Hansel sticks out a chicken leg instead, and the witch, whose eyesight is very bad, thinks it’s his finger and wonders why he doesn’t get fatter. After a couple of weeks the witch looses her patience. She can’t wait any longer. One morning the witch asks Grethel to light the fire and to get some water. Then she says to Grethel, that she needs to heat up the big oven so they can bake some cakes. The witch, whose very hungry, has the intend to eat both children. Hun wants boil Hansel in the big kettle and bake Grethel in the oven. When the oven is red hot, the witch pushes Grethel to it, and tells her to get in, to check if it’s hot enough.
