The platypus is a mammal. But it’s not a normal mammal. The platypus lays its eggs like reptiles. Only the platypus and two types of echidna, lays eggs among the mammals. The other mammals give birth to live animals. The platypus’ eggs feels like soft leather. The female, broods the eggs for 10 days. And then they hatch, and out of the eggs come 2,5cm. Small platypus babies. The baby platypuses swim around its mother for about five months.
How does it look?
The platypus is a “sewer animal”. The platypus and to other species of echidna, is the only sewer animals in the world. The reason they are being called sewer animals, is because there is only one opening in the back, where all they do comes out there. It’s where they are giving birth to a platypus or to pee. Like birds and reptiles.
When you see a photo of a platypus, you might think that it’s a pretty big animal. But in fact, the body is about 30-45 cm long. After that, comes the tale, which is 10-15 cm long. An adult platypus’ weight is normally about 0.5-2 kg. The male is a little bigger than the female.
