During the past few years the number of children forcibly removed from their parental environment has increased significantly to around twelve thousand annually. The majority of these infants have in common that they have experienced some form of neglect. This neglect is a big problem as many of these children will have to cope with the consequences for the rest of their life.
Every child is in need of care which consists of supervision, stimulation and affiliation. If either or more of these three basic needs are not covered, resulting in long term or permanent damage on the child's psycho, there is neglect. Common to all forms of neglect is that they inhibit the child's normal development and, consequently, the child is in danger of forming associated disorders. A child's attachment to its primary caretakers (usually the parents) is forming from birth to around 7 months of age. Thereafter the child will adapt to one of the different forms of affiliation. The child's attachment relationship is of primary importance to a normal and healthy development.
