I think that Jesminder is a hero because she fight for her opinions, against her strict parents. And she wouldn't change her opinions no matter what they say. They doesn’t agree with her, but she keeps fighting against them.
They are so ''conservative'' because of their religion that says that they should live up to what her parents been, and are (not fully) they must have the same properties (paragon/traditions). I think that the general perception is that the Indian families is really tied and strict, I also think that it would require some balls to stand against Indian parents.
The worst case has to sides:
1 The worst case could be that Jesminder would stop contacting her Indian family, because of she wouldn't accept the rules. And they wouldn’t accept that she doesn’t accept them. She want to live her life and she doesn’t think that her parent can determine her, Which I agree with.
The second worst case is that she bury herself into a person she doesn’t want to be. she could end up with accusing her family and culture, and perhaps regret her choices. Teenagers with a broken dream will be uncertain about their ambitions in the future.
