"Scary Movies"

B "Scary Movies" is an American short story published in 1995. The story is about racial segregation in America, and the problems between the black and the white people, and how they were split into different Groups. The story takes place in a small town, a few miles from New York City, in 1968. The town is split into two sections, a western section "fluent and white", and an eastern section "poor and black". (Line 39). We are not informed if the narrator is a boy or girl, but we now that the narrator is nine years old, which is quite young. The narrator and Kevin who is his best friend decide to go to the movie theatre (Roxy) one day. They are the only white people at the movie theatre. " Kevin and I were the only white people at the Roxy." (Line 34). They are scared and don't know what to do. They don't know so much about the black people except the stories that they have heard. "we knew nothing about our black neighbors other than the cruel jokes our parents sometimes told..." (Line 42). The movie theatre is a place where the narrator and Kevin forget all their problems. The movies at the theatre are different from the movies that they are used to watch. All the kids were on their feet, screaming warnings to the oblivious victim or encouragement to her attacker. The narrator and Kevin had never seen kids behave like that before, they sat quietly through films, and they laughed occasionally."You could laugh at the jokes, sure, but that was it. What you didn't... you felt them" (line67). The characters on the screen are facing problems that the black people could face every day.
