Amish Where did they come from?: The Amish are an American Protestant group with around 250,000 members who came to the USA more than two centuries ago to escape persecution. Today there are Amish communities in 24 of the U.S. states and in Canada, Central and South America, but no longer in Europe. Why did they immigrate to the us: Amish first began arriving in America in the early 1700’s, attracted by the promise of religious freedom in “Penn’s land”. Amish had been largely landless farmers in Europe, so the chance to own their own land was attractive as well.
