Why are so many teenagers in our society today, facing serious problems with growing up and finding their identity? I think it’s because the society we live in today is a very selfish one. Most people only think about themselves, but the problem become serious when parents are selfish because it affects their children but mostly teenagers. In the story “Clara’s Day “written by Penelope Lively in 1982, Clara experiences her mother’s selfishness.
Clara Tilling is 15 and the half years old. One day at school assembly she decides to take all of her clothes off. She goes past the headmistress lectern, where the head hesitates for a moment, and then begins to read out again. She walked naked through the lines of girls, when she reach her own form-room where she puts a science overall at her naked body. Afterward she talks with the head about her behavior. The head decides to write a letter to Clara's parents. After the episode Clara react like nothing ever had happened. But a few days later her parents receive the letter from Clara's school. But the mother does not become angry or sad, she begins to laugh, and then describe Clara's youth. She explains, to her boyfriend Stan that Clara used to be a prude, and that she is modest. In the end of the story, when the mother and Stan are driving towards their work, Clara sits at the table, where she begins to cry.
