“Clara’s Day” is a short story written by the author, Penelope Lively. The story is about an, apparently, ordinary girl, named Clara. On a regularly school day, she takes off all of her clothes, at the school assembly, and walks down the hall and pass all the other students and the headmistress. She then walks out and into the form room, where she puts on, one of the science overalls. While sitting in the form, one of the teachers enters the room with Clara’s clothes in her arms. She asks Clara to put the clothes on, and asks her, if Clara wants to go home, but Clara declines. During the first half of the day, a lot of people say “Well done!” to Clara and pat her on the back, but as the day progresses, the attention around her starts to vanish.
Then one of the prefects asks Clara to go, to see the Head, right after school. When Clara goes to the Head’s office, she studies it intensely, looking around on the pictures and photos on the wall. The Head and Clara talks about, why she did, what she did and if Clara has any kind of problems at home, but Clara could not find a specific reason to, why she did it, but the Head suggests, that it could be related to the fact, that Clara’s parents are divorced. The Head sends a letter home to Clara and that is it.
