“The happiest days of your life” is a short story that Penelope lively wrote, she is the author of the story. She writes both child and adult fiction stories. She was born in Cairo in 1933, and spent her childhood in Egypt, right before she was sent to a boarding school in England. The main characters in the story are Charles and his parents.
The story is about a boy and his parents and it takes place in southern England.
Throughout the story, the main characters are in their car, on their way to a boarding school to see if Charles is going to be a student there. His parents are going to decide whether or not their son should study there. Charles' parents are so excited to send their son to school. But Charles is very quiet and scared about his parents’ choice of school for him, after his experience with the other students.
Charles is a quiet boy; he doesn't speak very often. He has black hair, which flicks down to his head. He has large ears and his clothes are shining. His parents are talking and making decisions for him.
The father is sending his child away because it can give him great business contacts. He is thinking more about himself than he is thinking about his child. He does not care about what Charles wants. The parents are thinking more about their image. The territory in this story is old fashioned, because the school is in the country, and only the rich and fine people go to school there. And that is why his parents chose Edward's Preparatory School, they loved the surroundings of the school (p. 56 l. 4) the mother said “it is a lovely place. Those must be the playing fields.” (p. 56 l.15) “like the way they got the maid all done up properly”
