Mount Pleasant - by Mary-Louise BuxtonMary-Louise Buxtons short story ”Mount Pleasant”, is a short story about Elizabeth and her families’ life after moving into the house, Mount Pleasant. The story is told through Elizabeth herself, and this therefore makes it a first persons view. The narrative techniques and language is vey special, because the story is being told through the eyes of a child. The theme in the short story is childhood, since we get a viewpoint from a child’s life. I could also be a ghostly story or a fantasy, because weird things happen throughout the story, and it seems as if a ghost is going through the house, as it looks like from the teller’s point of view.
The fact, that the story is written with an explicit I teller, which makes it very interesting, because we get to know Elizabeths thoughts and experience. In the text Elizabeth talks about a boy on a photo, it says that he is round about 9-10 years old, not so much older than she is, which makes her about 8-9 years old. The language is also characteristic by the childish tone, and the protagonist has used nicknames for many names, as an example “Granny “OMIs Duckering Ball”, which is an ornamental glass ball. She also calls her brother “baby brother” with an extra b. most children often make up names and their own language and play with words, with the use of nicknames.
