Derek is racist in the beginning of the movie because, first of all his and Danny’s father was a racist, so especially Derek learned from his father. Secondly, their father was killed by a black drug dealer. Since then the hate got bigger and bigger.

The reason why Derek kills the two black thugs is because; they were trying to break in to his truck and besides he is a racist.

Cameron Alexander is the leader of the gang. He decides what the gang is going to do, and how it’s done. Mostly he tells his lap dog, Derek, what must be done, and then Derek deals with it. Cameron talks to the young people in the gang, and tells them exactly what they want to hear and gives them compliments. In that way he wins their confidence and their loyalty. Cameron makes the gang do his work and if they get caught it’s the members of the gang who’s going to prison, because the police have no evidence that can make Cameron look guilty.

Derek changes because he meets Lamont in prison, who is black and learn to see through Lamont’s eyes. In prison Derek also gets a visit by Mr. Sweenie, who makes Derek see that racism is pointless. One thing that clearly makes Derek change is that Mr. Sweenie asks Derek a question; “Has anything you’ve done made your life better?” Which makes Derek think of all the things that have happened through his life, and makes him realize that it hasn’t done any good?
