There is currently 313.9 million people living in America, but what makes a true American? What values and beliefs is the American people’s identity based on?
The most important American beliefs and values include freedom, individualism, volunteerism, mobility and patriotism.
Freedom is the basic belief that you are free to be whoever you want to be with the life you want to live. No one is holding you back to do what you want to do. No one owns you, whether you are white, black, Hispanic, middle-eastern or Asian, you are a free man. The American understands of freedom dates back to the U.S. constitutions Bill of Rights in 1791. People from all around the world come to America to pursue freedom and the life they dream about. For example soviet ballet-dancers come to America to pursue their dreams of becoming a successful ballet-dancer.
America has always been the place where immigrants have come to, when the country they originate from doesn’t give them the opportunities they need to succeed. America takes pride of this, because it shows that America is a desirable country to live in.
“Individualism” is realizing that you are on your own. You are the one, who is going to make your own future bright, not the government nor your parents. The third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, was the first person to bring individualism to the American beliefs and values. You have to rely on yourself economically, but also when it comes to your career. You cannot expect the government to give you your career handed to you without you working for it. You cannot ask the government for money and expect to become a billionaire for free, without having to work for it. America gives you the opportunity to let you fulfill your dreams, but you still do have to work for it.
