The horror story The Empty Birdhouse is about a happy couple named Edith and Charles, who lives beside an uninvited guest, which they don't get to see. The "guest" seems to be a squirrel, but with a bigger head and black eyes. Edith had a quick glimpse of the creature, but it could have been an illusion, she could not tell.

Charles and Edith have been married for seven years, but the marriage is not as stable as it seems. Despite the length of Edith and Charles' marriage, their relationship is rather secretive, because they both keep a deep secret for themselves. The couple tried to have a child once, but it did not succeed. Edith had a miscarriage - on purpose. Clearly, there is something wrong when you do that.
Charles' secret is, that he snitched one of his coworkers to get a better job, and then later on when the coworker was fired, he killed himself.
The main thing that the couple has to work on is trust, especially Charles. Charles doesn't trust Edith when she says she saw the animal (p. 3, l. 2-4).
The human world and the animal world seem to interact in various ways in this story.
