Suffer the Little Children is a tragic horror story of a hated teacher who goes mad because of the fear of losing her control over her students. In the end her illusion takes over and she loses her power. The themes in this story are: POWER, FEAR, and CONTROL.
Miss Sidley is a woman who keeps control with the kids and she can actually see the kids through her glasses even though she stands with her back towards them. The kids are afraid of her: But they feared her. Her tongue was a schoolyard legend. The eyes, when focused on a giggler or a whisperer, could turn the stoutest knees to water. (s. 182 l. 14-16) Therefore they are not doing anything that could piss her off. Miss Sidley can see what is going on and like in the other stories we don’t know if it’s something that is happening in her head, or if it is pure facts. The thought that it is going on in her head is most realistic in this story because it is so far out. She believes that the children are monsters and because of that she brings a gun to class and tells the kids that they are having a test separately in a different room. When she has killed half the class she is busted by another teacher and is later on being sent to a mental institution.
