Sunday the 7th of December 1941 the Japanese-navy launched a surprise attack on the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The attack were carefully planned by Admiral-Yamamoto Isoroku, and executed by Admiral-Nagumo Chuichi and Captain-Fuchida Mitsuo.
The Japanese navy knew their mission of bombing Pearl Harbor was at high risk, and it had to be a surprise attack in order to be successful. On November 26, 1941, the Japanese attack force, led by Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, left Etorofu Island in the Kurils, northeast of Japan. The attack force began its 3,000-mile journey across the Pacific Ocean with six aircraft carriers, nine destroyers, two battleships, two heavy cruisers, one light cruiser, and three submarines. After a week, the attack force made it safely to its destination, 230 miles north of the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
The actual attack began on the morning of December 7th at 7:55 AM. The Japanese attack force began to launch their airplanes against the ships in Pearl Harbor. Around that time, 70 sea crafts was found in the harbor, but unfortunately for the Japanese, not including any of the navy’s aircraft carriers.
First, the Japanese attack force launched the first wave with 183 planes and the attack came as big surprise for the Americans, and only after 4 minutes, they began to strike back. Beyond attacking the American ships in the harbor were the aircraft-bases attacked as well. The Japanese managed to create so much damage and chaos that the Americans only succeeded in launching very few planes.
