Ireland, also known as the “Green Island”, because of its’ lush green landscapes, is situated West of England and is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Irish and the Celtic seas. The frequent rain and the mild temperatures is the cause for its lushness. The last ice age brought in a lot of animals and plants from Europe, that’s why the Island has a rich animal- and plant life. After this ice age approximately 11.000 years ago, the ice melted and flooded the earth separating Ireland and England from each other. This is the reason why, there is water between the two countries. The island also has rivers, lakes, moors and mountains. The biggest mountain range is called Wicklow Mountains. On the West- and Southside of Ireland, it’s very cliffy. Ireland covers an area of 70.285km2, with an estimated population in 2008 of 4,422,100 people. Approximately 150 years ago more than 1 million Irish people died of starvation. In five years in a row the potato harvest was destroyed by fungus. Even more immigrated to the US. More than 35 million people in US can trace there family roots back to Ireland.
Food I Ireland
Today you can see Western food appearing in Ireland, such as fast food chains, like pizza-hut and McDonald’s. This has resulted in many people suffering from overweight and more cases of heart disease. The government has tried television advertisements as an effort to increase public awareness about healthy eating habits. At the same time with these new modern developments, there has been a revival, with traditional Irish ingredients being used. In early Ireland they ate a lot of potatoes and meat.
