The ”Reunion” is a short story written by John Cheever and was published in 1962, and later in a collection of his work called “The Stories of John Cheever”. Cheever was son of a failed salesman and became an alcoholic together with his brother, but Cheever chose to write instead of just drinking and he became one of the greatest writers in the era. Writing mostly about the middle and the upper-middle class man from Manhattan, Cheever wrote some of the most iconic short stories that descripted the typical New Yorker in the 50’s and 60’s – the “Mad Men”-era.
Cheever writes the story from Charlie’s point-of-view. Charlie talks about “the last time I saw my dad”, i.e. he’s thinking back to that time. The story is therefor told as if it was a flashback.
The story takes place in the 50’s or 60’s New York City and the persons are from the upper-middle class of society. It’s about a boy called Charlie meeting his father at Grand Central Station for a brief period of time for the first time in three years. His dad takes him around to different restaurants to get some drinks, but it ends with Charlie leaving his dad at the newspaper stand because he’s being rude to the seller.
