Analyse af John Cheevers novelle 'Reunion'

Reunion is a short story written by John Cheever. The story is about a boy who´s=who is (ingen sammentrækninger på skrift) going to meet his dad. His mom divorced his dad 3 years ago. He hadn’t seen him since. He was looking up to his dad who was a big and good-looking man. When they meet=nutid. Du må ikke skifte mellem datid og nutid. he observed =datid that his dad smells=NUTID of whiskey and after-shave lotion, shoe polish and woolens like a true mature male. He wanted a proof that they have been together, fx. a photo. They went to a restaurant. They sat down and his father started shouting at the bartender in different languages. Then he started disrespectfully clapping at the bartender. That made the bartender mad and they started an angry discussion. The bartender said quietly that they had to leave. Then they entered another restaurant. It all started quietly. They got their drinks. When the father ordered another drink the bartender asked “how old is the boy”( l. XX) and the father answered disrespectfully; “….that is none of your goddamned business” (l. XX) The bartender refused to serve another drink so they had to leave once again. In the next restaurant the waiter is wearing a pink jackets like hunting coats and there were a lot of horse tacks on the walls. They sat down and his father started to shout and argue with the waiter and they left immediately. The fourth restaurant they went to was Italian. His father started to speak Italian but the waiter couldn’t speak Italian. Then the waiter spoke with the captain. The captain came over and told them that the table was reserved. So they had to leave again. When they were outside he= Charlie told his dad that he had to get his train. His father wanted to walk him back to the station but he told his dad that it was all right. At the newsstand his father asked angrily to get a “goddamned, no-good, ten-cent afternoon paper” (l. XX). Then they started a discussion and that ended up with the boy´Ss f+g leaving the area to go get his train. That was the last time he saw his dad.
