Bootleg DVD and CD sellers are winning the fight against the British government!

It is a well-known problem across the UK that the bootleg DVD and CD sellers have enjoyed booming businesses in the recent years, with some pirates factories raking in profit of 5 million pounds a month.

The booming bootleg DVD selling career is said to be caused by the low prison terms, which are a maximum of 10-years. Bryan Lewin an international intellectual property specialist at the Trading Standards Institute says: “Many people I have raided in other types of crimes, had started Intellectual Property factories, as a softer option of earning illegally money. You can say that they see it as low risk detection but with a really high profit opportunity area of crime”. Some counterfeiting anti-experts have reckoned that DVD sellers make a profit of 1 million pounds a week just by running hundreds of burners around the clock.

It is the easiest business model for the counterfeiters, since they can make their gold mine in an ad hoc factory or just in their own homes; where they have machines, which pay themselves in, on a daily basis. The minister of science and innovation Malcolm Wicks, concludes that bootleg, film, music and game dealers cost the creative industry 9 billion pounds a year, and furthermore rob the government of millions of pounds of VAT. These facts have made the ministers worry, and they have now started to show some interest in protection of filmmakers and record labels, after an official statistic has shown that the creative industry contributes 8.8% to the UK’s economic output.
