SummaryHe was the same age as my sister is written by Mieke C. Malandra who lives in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The text is a description of life in the war. How it was to experience the war.
The short story is about a woman in an age of sixty seven. She was a little child in a war, and she describes how it was. When the weather turns in October, she feels eleven years again, because it reminds her of the time in war. That is probably because of how dark and grey the weather was that time in war. She tells about the war, like it was a hard time to live in. There were no food, no coal and no electricity. Men weren’t allowed to stay inside, they should help each other to fight against the enemies. Therefore the army trucks closed the streets at night and then afterwards they searched through every house, because they should check that there were no men. Then they dragged all women out on the street before searching the houses. The women were making jokes about the soldiers, so it didn’t felt so horrible, but they almost whispered, even though the soldiers didn’t understand Dutch. After a little while, one woman heard a sixteen year old boy crying. They found out that he was a soldier, just like those men who searched the houses. The boy hasn’t had any food that entire day and that was why he cried. Then some of the women gave him some food. The boy was the same age, as the first-person narrator’s sister, and that is probably why the short story is called “He was the same age as my sister”.
