The short story How Lucky You Are is written by Debi Alper and it was published in the year of 2010. The story takes place in London, England. It is about a teenage kid called Max and his short meeting with a girl named Ishraqi. The story shows that it is important to appreciate what you have today because you may not have it tomorrow. Therefore is it important to get the best out of what you have got and remember how lucky West-Europeans are.

The main character in the story is Max. He is sixteen years old and he lives with his mother. His father had left them the year before to go “find himself” in another country. Max is old enough to understand that his father was getting bored with his life in London and needed a fresh start somewhere else.

Just before the father left him max was moved from a normal public school to a school focused on art. He was dedicated to his school studies until the father left and he went back to his old routine with truanting from school. He is not interested in anything about school as the text says: “…We’ve got a Maths assessment today”…”witch, you twat, is the exact reason why I’m bunking off.”(Page 8, line 28-30).
