The short story “How Lucky You Are” by Depi Alber is about a young boy named Max. He is a creative child and has always been enthusiastic about school. Max’s father decides to leave the family, and this is making Max disengaged from school. He is skipping classes, becoming uninterested and starts smoking. Max on his way home meets a refugee from Iran named Ishraqi. Max learns about Ishraqi’s past and why she is now in England. She is learning English and currently on the way to a meeting to decide her future in the country. The meeting gets postponed so Max and Ishraqi begin exploring the city together. They connect and fall for each other, however their time ends quickly as Ishraqi gets deported without a goodbye.
The analysis
In the beginning of the story Max doesn’t appreciate what he has. We are introduced to an ungrateful 16-year-old boy, who is in rebellion against his unfair life. Max’s family life is described with a lot of anger and trust issues: “Yeah right, Dad. That's why I heard her crying every night for weeks after you left. Fuck off then and if you do manage to find yourself in Thailand or wherever you are, give yourself a kick in the bollocks from me. “(p 1, ll. 16-18). He seems angry and is clearly burning with feelings that are undealt with.
