Luck comes in many forms. Some think luck is to have a lot of money, others to find the love of your life. Some think, that being alive is luck in itself.

But what is luck for yourself, and do we sometime take it for granted?

Luck is the main theme in the short story “How lucky you are” by Debi Alper.

This story is written is third person limited narrator, whom takes us through Max’s encounter with the Iranian refugee Ishraqi.

The structure is this story is very unusual. The story starts in present time with Max sitting at home, with a photograph of Ishraqi. You can already now foreshadow, that the story will be centred around Ishraqi and Max’s relationship. The story then cuts to a flashback of Max sitting in the bus with his friend. Throughout the flashback we are introduced to Ishraqi and how they met. The flashback now continues in chronicle order until he arrives home. Then we are back to present day in the story.

In the start and present time in the story we already get to know Max. He is a sixteen-year-old boy, who lives with his mother all by himself because his father abandoned them. Max is a very rebellious and mad teen. He is mostly like that because of his farter. He feels unlucky because he has to take care of his mom and himself. He seems to both like and dislike school. He got into The Brit School which he liked a lot, but he still had to do the subjects he hated the most. Math and English. Max also has a twisted imagination. His teachers think it’s a good thing, and it’s his imagination that makes him creative. Max’s relationship with his mother is on the edge of disaster. They always fight because of Max’s rebellious behaviour. His mother thinks he should concentrate more on his homework, and take responsibility of his actions.
