Sometimes it is more noticeable when parents try to hide their problem for their children than they think. In the short story Ice Break by Astrid Blogett we see how parents have convinced themselves that their own children are not aware of the parents’ difficulties.
The short story introduces the reader to the 3 sister, Down, Marla and Janie. Apart from the sisters we also read about the mother and the father. The short story is narrated with Dawn’s point of view, so that makes her the narrator of this short story.
““Want to come?” “Naw, I don’t want to,” Janie said. “Dad’ll probably stop at Jack’s.” I didn’t know if he would, but it was worth the try.”
Down is going out to fish with her father, but we get the feeling that she doesn’t feel so good about going with him alone, so she tries to convince her sister Janie to come with them. Later Dawn persuades to convince Janie to come by giving her a five-dollar bill.
Marla has an babysitting job and therefore we must assume that this is the reason Dawn doesn’t ask her. Marla is also the one that in the short story that tries to tell her sisters that their parents slowly are going apart, that they have problems. This makes us also presume that she is the oldest.
