In the start of the book, we meet a model named Tracey. Tracey grew up with her father and mother in Manchester, but got kicked out of her father because of an unacceptable boyfriend. The boyfriend (Pete), suggested that they should moved to London because he had some friends who he claimed, lived in London. But there were no friends. Tracey and Pete where forced to live on the cold street of London. With minimal amount money, no food and no place to get shelter from the cold UK weathers. A lot of things happen in the period in London, but it ends up with Pete getting in jail for burglary. And Tracey is now all alone. She starts posing to earn some money, when one day a photographer named Charlie saw a great talent.

Tracey’s model career has taken her to Australia, in the hot desert near a place called Victoria Springs. With Tracey is, her old friend Charlie. Tracey has made a deal with Charlie as a favour for Charlie, because he helped her when she was miserable as a favour for Charlie. After Charlie has taken the perfect pictures, they agreed to get back to civilization. They had driven for a long time and the sun began to set, they realized that they where going the wrong direction. Charlie was driving fast and it was very dark. Suddenly the road turned sharp left, and they have no time to react, resulting a crash. Charlie broke his leg but nothing very bad happened to Tracey. Tracey gets a blackout and wakes up not able to see Charlie anywhere. She finds him laying in a dried out river. He is unable to walk. Tracey lies down with him and tells him about her boyfriend Pete and her time as a homeless girl.
