Sunday in the park

The short story " Sunday in the park" was written by Bel Kaufmann. Bel Kaufmann was born May 10,1911 in Berlin. Bel Kaufmann was a RussianAmerican professor and author.She is best known for her 1965 bestseller " Up the down the Staircase". In the beginning of the story author gives images of the two families, the "good" and the "strange". The father in the "good" familie (Morton) is polite, shy and pale because of working on the University. The other father is angry, violent,impudent and dreadful. It´s two diferent kind of persons. Larrys mother is a importent character too. When Joe throw sand on Larry she wants that Larry should throw back and fight for himself. She is also a bad person in this story. The mother wishes that Larry could stand up and protect himself as Joe. But if she was a good mother she would say to Larry that he should move from the sandbox. It was also Morton who turned back and leave the park, when he and Joes father argue. Morton also said that if she could discipline the child then he would. They haven´t a genuine relationship. The mother of Larry is a person who wants her familie to fight insted of freedom : "Stop crying," she said sharply. " I´m ashamed of you!" ( p. 3, l. 31), and she said: " If there had been an issue involved, she thought, if there had been something to fight for.. But what else could he possibly had done? Allow himself to be beaten? Attempt to educate the man?" ( p. 3, l. 33). But Morton wants to speak about the things insted of use violence. The children is in the begining playing fine until Joe throw sand on Larry.
