8-mile is about the environment in Detroit and how people are divided into black and white people. The black people live in ghettoes in zip 313 in the centre Detroit, while the white people, called White Trash, live in zip 810 in trailer parks. The movie draws a picture of Detroit’s big problem with people, who moves away from the city to get better jobs and opportunities. Detroit is a ghost town now. In the past 10 years 250.000 people has been leaving the city and since 1950 they have lost 50% of the population. Once Detroit was a big industrial city because of GM Motors and there were plenty of work for everyone. The city grew really fast, but when machines started to take over manual labour, everything could be made much cheaper in Asia. The car companies have moved their factories to Asia now, so there isn’t work to get for the people in Detroit. That’s the main reason why people are moving away from the city. They left their homes, so now 1/3 of all factories and houses in Detroit are abandoned. Once Detroit was that city in USA with most millions per inhabitant, but now they are poor and live in ghettoes or trailer parks. There is an unemployment rate on about 20% and only 25% of the population finish college. There are more young people who go to prison than pass the exam. That’s some of the reasons why there is such a high crime rate in Detroit. It’s the third most violent city in USA and 7 out of 10 murders are unsolved.
