The short story Kiss starts in medias res, where for the first time you are presented with the couple, who stand in the entrance to the subway and kiss, while a young man gets ready to detonate a bomb. The short story is atypical and different, as it starts and ends with the exact same scene. All that else goes on in the short story is content from the lives of the 3 characters, including a lot of flashbacks. The start of the short story serves as a hook for the reader, who becomes curious about what is going to happen.

Who are the 3 characters? In the short story we are presented with a young woman and two young men, common to them is that they have all had a difficult past, with abuse and discrimination. Their lives are told in flashbacks, these flashbacks are things that happen relatively before their paths are crossed in the subway station.

The woman is described as being young. Her clothes are also described very specifically. She is wearing a silver jacket, green sneakers, her blonde hair is set up in a ponytail and her skin is pale. The girl's status is also described, she is privileged. She lives in a high-rise on "Highgate Hill", the house seems open and cozy, here is arranged a family dinner, the girl's parents are lawyers. The girl has little siblings arguing, this handles the mother with mild scolding. The short story reveals that the girl is sexually abused by the father, the episodes with the father are described as the father sneaking into her room and assaulting her, only to hiss her that she must not tell the mother. These episodes clearly affect the girl, she is restrained and very much inside her own universe, she does not have a need to be social with the other girls at school. She won't have dinner with them or with them at the café after school. The short story describes that the girl is angry and angry, she lives under a barrier and suffers from the inability to account for herself.
