The Happiest Days of Your life is a short story with an omniscient third person narrator without commenting. The story is about a boy and his parents and it takes place in southern England. In the beginning of the text, the main characters are in their car, on the way to a boarding school to see if Charles are going to be a student there. The main characters in the story is Charles and his parents. Charles is a quite boy, he does not say much. When we have read the story, we can conclude that he is shy. He has black hair, which flicks down smooth to his head. He has big ears. His clothes is shining. His parents are talking and making decisions in his place. The father is sending his child away because it can give him great business contacts. He is thinking more on himself, than his is thinking about his child. He does not care about what Charles want. The parents are thinking more about their image. The mother is very snobbish and very keen on being with the richest of people. You can see an example of it when the headmaster’s wife asks if they are living in Finchley. The mother answer is short and certainly. She studies the headmaster’s wife from shoes to hairstyle, pricing and assessing. It is another example of the mother being snobbish. The relationship between the main characters is not strong, when the mom asks the child about something she does not wait for an answer she just keep talking. - All right, Charles? You did not get sick in the car, did you? The boy does not answer the question; it is just one of the examples of the relationship between the mom and boy. They do not talk about problems. It is like the mother is living in a fantasy world where everything is perfect. It is a very formal family, the parents wants their boy to be perfect and live up to the standards they mean are right. You can see it the way they are comparing schools. They want him to go to a great and popular school. They want their boy to fit in to the upper high social class they come from.
