A Literary Essay on P. Lively’s The Happiest Days of Your Life from 1978

“The setting in “The Happiest Days of Your life” is present to the time the short story is published. “Shoes old but expensive - Russel and Bromley. Good skirt BIouse could be Marks and Sparks - not sure. Real pearls. Super Victorian ring”(page 5, line 1-3) .

In the text there are some references to some popular English brands like “Marks and Spencer” and “Russel and Bromley” which is tow brands there were on the market in the upper class in UK in the 1900th .

The short story take place in 3.person by an omniscient narrator. Which makes it easier for us as a reader to understand.

The relationship between the boy and the parents is a little bit uptight.

“He looks so hideously pale, compared to those boys we saw outside” (page 5, line 26-27) “The mother pitched her voice a notch higher to speak to her child in the back of the car. 'Would you like to go there, Charles? Like Simon Wilcox? Did you see the lovely gym, and the swimming pool? And did the other boys tell you all about it? The child does not answer” (page 6, line 2-5)
