The story starts out with a boy called Charles sitting in a car with his parents. They are on their way to a preparatory school to see if it would be a nice place for the boy to continue his education. When they enter the school they meet a woman who tells them to wait for the headmaster. This they do and soon the headmaster’s wife enters the room. She greets them and apologizes for the absence of her husband, the headmaster. Afterwards they talk of where Charles and his parents live and the grown-ups get a drink. After a short while the headmaster come in and greets them with his hand on Charles’

head. The headmaster’s wife takes Charles away to meet the students at the school. They go to a room where some boys are playing and are being noisy but the second they enter, the boys become quiet. When the woman leaves the room the boys gather around in a circle around Charles. Soon they ask him questions about himself and he answers.

As they keep asking questions Charles keeps hearing less and less of what they say and suddenly he hears someone saying that they are going to mash him next term. The headmasters wife comes in and fetches him back to his parents and they get back in the car. Charles parents talk about the school, the headmaster and his wife and decide to send Charles there. The setting of this story is geographically in Sussex (page 61, line 2) which is a rather rich place in England so it is also a rich environment. That can also be seen in the fact that the school is a big mansion with a swimming pool (page 65, line 25) which is not common for boarding schools. Also inside the school you can tell it is a fine place. There are more or less intellectual magazines lying next to the leather chair (page 62, line 22) and the maid is dressed up fine (page 62, line 16). The school is also an expensive preparatory school (page 67, line 16) so this also shows that this is not
