Nelson Rolihlala Mandela was born July 18’Th 1918 near Umtata in Transkei. He was chosen to be in an arranged marriage and to become chief advisor, but he ran from both of them because he wanted to be a lawyer. Mandela graduated from University of Fort Hare and University of Witwatersrand. Mandela and his friend Oliver Tambo was the first black people who opened a law firm in South Africa.

Robben Island Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spends 27 years locked up, is located 12 km from Cape Town in South Africa.
In the 20’Th century the island was notorious as a prison for political prisoners under the apartheid regime. Fellow famous inmates were Walter Sisulu, Tokyo Sexwale, Govan Mbeki, Dennis Brutus and Robert Sobukwe. In 1991 the prison closed and is now museum and monument for the battle against apartheid.
In the jail time was security very high and there was no entry for almost all civilians.
The 5th August 1962 is Nelson Mandela apprehended by the apartheid regime's security police. He was stopped on the way from Durban to Johannesburg when his car was stopped at Cedara. He was arrested and sentenced to 6 years imprisonment. He escapes from prison and goes on the run. In South Africa are there later erected a monument at Cedara in honor of President Mandela.
