No matter who you are, all people have one thing in common for sure; They have dreams. Through life, almost everybody will meet obstacles, which make it seem impossible to achieve these dreams. In the short story “Dukwane´s Deliverance”, by Neil Ramsorrun from 2010, the main character Dukwane tries to fit into the society in spite of the fact that he is black and at the very end, paralyzed. But does it really matter that much, if you are willing to fight?
The black boy, Dukwane, appears as the protagonist in the story about a boy´s struggle to reach his dream against all odds.
Dukwane works at the Holy Fried Chicken and lives together with his mom and dad in the town Camden, England. The William family is probably from the lower middle class. Everyday, when Dukwane comes home from school, both of his parents are at home. You don’t get the impression that the father has been at work, since he is just sitting in his unbuttoned shirt, yelling at the television. In spite of that, the Williams are still able to afford a TV. Dukwane is a very compassionate, responsible and reliable young man, who instinctively does whatever he can to help other people (page 10, line 79-81). This quality almost makes him lose his own life at the very end. Dukwane tries to break the social inheritance between him and his father (page 8, last paragraph) even though he feels sorry for him. His biggest dream is to become a greater politician than Barack Obama. Since Barack Obama is the President in seat right now, the story must take place in our time. Dukwane has obviously developed into the complete opposite of his father, an example of this is that Dukwane got into Kings College; Cambridge University. Dukwane has probably not lived in England his whole life. He mentions, “He couldn’t really say he felt part of any of it. Yet”. The “yet” could also be a symbol of the black minority in England, or at least in Camden. Maybe
