The main character is Dukwane. He is a diligent boy. He is black and fights hard to get his dream job in politics. His family may be an influence on Dukwane, maybe that's why he wanted to succeed on a high level to become a politician.you can clearly sense how happy he got when he entered a good school. He is helpful in the way that he will shop for his parents on his way home from work (Page 1, line 29)
He is also a boy with a lot of surplus energy, for example when he runs into the gang but he tries to calm them down (page 3, line 79-80). He is mentally strong as he wants to get out of his families circle and become more than his parents,the text tells "As he looked at his father sat there, his bottom shirt button open and exposing his belly overhanging his trousers, he felt a sense of sadness, but also a determination to be more. ” (Page 1, line 24)
The setting is that, the Dukwane's family lives in London in a neighborhood of violence and gangs, his mother tells him to be careful when he goes out, she says "be careful not to walk by the canal, it will be dark soon." (Page 2, line 32) He knows the environment and knows you have to be careful, his instinct when he hears footsteps is that he has to cross to the other side of the road but he was stabbed by the gang. He knows he will be different from everyone else at his new school. “ I don’t want to be me. This is not how it’s supposed to be. I was going to be someone, and now I’m a cripple.” (Page 4, line 117)
