Summary of the Civil War The American civil war started on April 12, 1861, when the confederates attacked a fortress in South Carolina, owned by the Union. Fort Sumter. As a response to this, freshly elected president Abraham Lincoln, called for 75.000 men to fight to save the union. While Jefferson Davis, newly elected president of the Confederate Stated, made a similar appeal for men to fight for the Confederacy.
