The American civil war started on April 12, 1861, when the confederates attacked a fortress in South Carolina, owned by the Union. Fort Sumter. As a response to this, freshly elected president Abraham Lincoln, called for 75.000 men to fight to save the union. While Jefferson Davis, newly elected president of the Confederate Stated, made a similar appeal for men to fight for the Confederacy. It didn’t take long before volunteers rushed forward to assist both sides.
During the civil war, the north faced a great difficulty. Being that the only way they could win this war was by invading the south and occupying the land there. The south on the other hand, had no such problem. As all they had to do to win the war, was to hold out until the north grew tired of fighting. This was however countered by the fact that the north was way better equipped and outnumbered the south 6 to 1.
The war was mainly fought in two areas – in Virginia and the other east coast states of the Confederacy, and in Mississippi valley. In Virginia, the union tried multiple times to capture the Confederate capital, Richmond. However each time they tried they were thrown back, this is because the Confederate army had two great advantages, the first being the many river that crossed the roads to the south, which made the city easier to defend. But also the Capitals generals, who at the time were superior to the generals leading the Union.
