What is a selfie? How do you take a selfie? Is the selfie here to stay? That is some of the questions I wall cast a little light over in this paper.
The selfie is a picture you typical take with your front camera. The typical selfie taker is a girl in the age of 13-18. I myself often see girls in this age walking on the street while taking a selfie. They are typical snapping* with some of their friends.
The first selfie ever registered was taken in 1839 by the man Robert Cornelius. The big difference from then to now is that at that time it was men in their 30’s that took their own self-portrait because a camera at that time was very expensive so it was not for everyone. However today it is mostly girls in the age of 13-18 that take selfies. Almost every girl in a Denmark, England or Germany owns a smartphone so they all off them can connect to the internet and post their selfie.
Oxford dictionary defines a selfie as “A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media.” They supplement the definition with the text “occasional selfies are acceptable, but posting a new picture of yourself every day isn’t necessary.” If you go on Instagram 80% off all pictures are selfies. Each day the estimated amount of selfies taken is close to 93 million.
