The word “poverty” means that a person does not have enough resources available. Some definitions of poverty is measurable, where there are lack of the elementary necessaries such as food, water shelter, clothes and health, where in other definitions poverty is a subject phenomenal, where there perhaps are not lack of the basic necessaries but where the social needs are not covered. In the article “Being poor” by Richard Burns, we are given his definition of what poverty is.
The article “Being poor” is written by Richard Burns in 2012 and is a self-portrait of him. It starts with him as a poor boy that helps his father with coal. His father was a mineworker and mother a shop worker. He is a social worker, who later in his life turns into a writer. His life story takes place between 1958 and 1997 in a back-to-back environment: “All the doors in the street were open all the time, as I recall. Neighbours just walked into your house and announced themselves with "hey up. You really could leave your door open all day, because no one had anything worth nicking ". This quote shows us exactly how little they had, because they just led their doors open. The quote also shows that the people in this back-to-back environment were very close. Throughout the article Burns gains life experiences from his poor challenging life.
