The Cleveland Elementary School shooting took place on January 29, 1972, in San Diego. Shots were fired at a public elementary school. The principal and a custodian were killed. Eight children and a police officer were injured.
The freckled-face red headed teen, Brenda Spencer, found a unique way to liven up her Monday morning. The not-so-sweet 16-year-old girl lived in a house across the street from the school, where the shooting found place. Tried as an adult, Spencer pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and assault with a deadly weapon. She is currently in prison.
The police had found an address and a phone number from where they thought the shooting was coming from. A local reporter dialed the phone number and a young girl answered. The reporter asked if she new where the shooting came from, and she gave the reporter her address. When the reporter pointed out that it was her address, she answered softly “Yeah, who do you think is doing the shooting?”
The reporter asked Brenda why she carried out the shooting. She answered: "I don't like Mondays; this livens up the day."
Brenda Ann Spencer
Spencer is best known for her quote "I don't like Mondays," which inspired the song "I Don't Like Mondays" by The Boomtown Rats. The song was a UK number one single for four weeks in mid-1979.
