Today I want to talk about gun violence, and more specifically about Brenda Spencer.
I chose this topic because I find it both interesting and disturbing. The case is very bizarre, especially when you look at American gun laws at the time. It shocked me how easy it was for a teenager to get access to a weapon, and how one person could change so many lives in just a few minutes.
This case also shows how gun violence is not only about weapons, but about mental health, family background, and responsibility.
The school shooting
The shooting happened in 1979 at Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California.
Brenda Spencer was only 16 years old when she started shooting from her home, which was directly across the street from the school. She fired at children and adults as they arrived for the school day.
Two adults were killed, and several children were injured.
From her perspective, she later said that she did it because she was bored and didn’t like Mondays. This sentence became very famous and shows how disturbing and careless her mindset was at the time.
Who is Brenda Spencer?
Brenda Spencer had a difficult childhood. She grew up in a broken home, struggled in school, and had clear mental health issues. Her father gave her a rifle as a gift, even though she had shown warning signs before.
