The short story starts off rather slowly, but it immediately draws you in, and you want to know more about what’s going on. Tommy is lying in the grass for some reason, and we, as readers, don’t know why. Yet.
After a series of flashbacks, we find out that he’s on a hunt with his father, and apparently Tommy is on his first hunt and is being taught how to shoot a weapon. From here on out, we sort of get a grip of what’s going on and we aren’t as confused anymore.
The story draws out for another approximately 2 pages, of pretty much nothing but detail and background. It can get quite boring to some readers, but also leads up to something, which keeps the reader interested. As Tommy’s father walks into the forest and Tommy lies alone, we get a feeling of something’s bound to go wrong.
As Tommy lies there, alone, he grows nervous and hears some rustling in the midst of the shrubbery. He squeezes the trigger, killing his prey. For a second he thought he killed his father, but then his dad comes back and Tommy finds out he actually killed a black man in chains, most likely a slave escapee. His father is very proud of him and Tommy is now considered a man in his eyes. His father takes him to a pub, and Tommy gets his first drink of alcohol, something every man should do.
