Analyse af 'The Death of Tommy Grimes'

The short story “The Death of Tommy Grimes” (1962) is written by R.J. Meaddough is a story about a 12-year-old boy Tommy Grimes. He is in the forest with his dad to go hunt. He has been hunting with his father before but at that time he was unable to shoot his goal. Tommy looking up to his father so this time he doesn't want to disappoint him.

In the hunt, Timmy was ready with the rifle while his father would lure the “animal” from the bush. Suddenly the animal appeared, and Timmy squeezes the trigger. For a second he doubted whether it was the nigger or his father he had shot. But Timmy’s father Pa appeared from the bush and Timmy was now a hero.

Analysis

The story takes place in the southern states America more specific in Collierville in Mississippi. (p. 2 l. 2) The forest is the main physical setting in the narrative. We don’t hear anything about the time setting but we can assume that it must be in the period of 1860-1960. It was the period in which blacks were hugely suppressed and the period when lots of blacks were murdered by white men from the south.
