The short story has used a 3rd person narrator to tell the story. The narrator is able to know what the main character Tommy thinks. The narrator is bound to the main character, since he describes his feelings and thought through the short story. The angle of the narrator’s point of view is not really wide, since he only knows what the main character feels and thinks. Therefore, we can’t see it from their point of view.
Character
The narrator describes the characters by showing us what the actors are like through their actions, dialogue and interaction. On the first page the narrator describes when it all started, when Tommy was eleven years. It was night and there was a weasel in the hen-yard. Tommy did not even fire the shot - he just stood there with his mouth open and did not get to shoot his first weasel. Then Pa was asking: “What’s wrong with you, boy?” and afterwards he hunkered and did not say anything for a while. It shows that Pa was disappointed in Tommy, but he did not want to tell him. Tommy answered that he just couldn’t in a stuttering voice. From that we can tell that Tommy was scared and that he is an insecure boy. He really wants to shoot an animal so he can make Pa proud, but it is more difficult than Pa thinks. This was an example of the narrator using the words to show us how the characters are.
