The book is about a boy called Tommy Britten, who lives in a small town called Shipton. Tommy’s dad wants to take Tommy to a football match, to see Shipton United. They are going to see Shipton United versus London City, in a Cup match. Shipton United wins the match 2-1. Now Tommy and Lenny, Tommy’s dad, decides to go, to the match in London. But Dolly, Tommy’s mum, says that Tommy can’t go to the match because she is afraid of London’s hooligans. Tommy and Dolly are watching the match on television, but Lenny is in London. Tommy and Dolly sees that Lenny gets kicked in his face.

Tommy is very excited about hooligans, so he turns in to a skinhead. A few months later, Tommy meets the leader of a rival group of skinheads. His name is Tony, Tony and Tommy is jumping out of the train, because they hear that there are a lot of policemen at the station in Manchester. Tony and Tommy are now friends. Tony invites Tommy to go to Germany, to see England versus Germany. Tommy accepts the invitation. They need to go to the Netherlands, and then to Germany, because there are many policemen waiting for them, to arrive with the ferry in Germany. On the ferry to the Netherlands, Tony gets drunk and seasick, so Tommy helps him outside. Out on the deck, a black girl who is a doctor wants to help, but when Tony sees that it is a black girl, he tries to kill her. Tommy saves the girl and gets angry on Tony. Tommy decides to go home to Lenny and Dolly. Lenny and Dolly becomes very happy, when they see Tommy.
