America has a problem. It is a problem very few other places in the world possess. Creationism keeps trying to make its way into the science classrooms of public schools. The question of whether religion should be taught in public schools has been debated at length. In theory, since the Supreme Court explained that “we are to teach not preach and educate not indoctrinate”, the analysis could be simple. The only question would be, What is the underlying purpose behind the content?
Not only are there schools in Texas and Ohio which allow for the teaching of creationism in science class, defended as teaching the controversy, but Los Angeles and Tennessee even go so far as to have laws which allow teaching evolution to be optional.
Just last year there was an attempt to pass a law, which would allow for parents to remove their children from science classrooms if they were exposed to the Theory of Natural Selection. The fact that some schools can opt out of teaching a scientific fact like evolution is absolutely absurd. There is more evidence for evolution than gravity. Do these parents and legislators question if gravity should be taught in schools?
